Commoners Rights

My Mum and Dad were some of the last people to leave the forest, being New Forest gypsies they were made to leave, but all the generations I know about all came from the New Forest, so do we have any rights at all being their kids? We have always lived within five mins walk of the forest and still do but my house was built in 1937 so would that have any rights? Kind regards Mrs Parker
My reply........
Hi Mrs Parker
To find out whether your house has Commoners Rights to the New Forest you would have to contact The Verderers office in Lyndhurst. They hold an Atlas of Forest Rights. You can view the Atlas by making an appointment with the Clerk to the Verderers.
Telephone & Fax
Sue Westwood - T: 023 8028 2052; F: 023 8028 3101

The Verderers of the New Forest,
The Queen's House,
Lyndhurst,
Hampshire,

If you found you did have Commoners Rights there would be a charge although viewing the Atlas is free.
Good luck with your search.

Wells in Australia
by: Miriam Wells

My great granddad was a Wells from the New Forest. He was sent out to Australia by himself as a ten year old as part of their child migration scheme circa 1910. We're pretty sure he was taken away or given up rather than an orphan. If anyone has any information you can contact me at contact@makeupbymiriam.com

Millersford Bottom
by: Raymond PIDGLEY

My Uncle Georgie and Aunt Chinkie moved out of the bottom with everyone else and went to live near Ringwood, with the rest of their family, when I was in The Royal Marines I often saw them in Ringwood Market.
Rene my cousin lives in School Lane, Godshill, we used to live in School House, Godshill, then moved to Downton Wilts, where I joined up, and went with Michael my brother in the Royal Marines 40 Commando.

Yes, it is good to find out who is who because you don't know who you are marrying because no one talks about it. Because I am middle 50s most older people in my family have died or have forgotten and I think that is sad. I am trying to find out more and hope to get further with my search. Regards Flo

I shall continue checking, because it is interesting to find out where these people went to after they left 'the bottom', and at the same time I found someone in New Zealand that I went to school with in 'Godshill', although I know that some people in my family married into yours, including the 'Sheens' that were moved from 'the bottom' to Ringwood.
I can remember 'Eileen' who moved to Ringwood in the 1955s. My cousin.

I had a brother named George who lived in a village in between Cadnam and Totton, but he died a few years back.
He is buried in a small cemetery there, just off the main Southampton road, and that is also where one of my brother Mike's daughter lives now, she married one of the Turner's.

Now I remember the name of the family that lived in the 'bottom', as they used to call it - Giles, and they were pretty well educated, one of them was Charlie Giles.

The Bottom
by: Ray Pidgley

I can remember my Grandad (Dicky Sheen)carrying huge bundles of wood down the hill, they always had a fire on, mainly for cooking, Rosie and Beatty used to live in a caravan, near to my Granny's shack, their land was all fenced off, and your people lived just below them, and their land was all fenced in.
There were two brothers that lived down there, I forget their name, and they both worked a Downton Tannery, my brother (Mike) and I, both worked at the tannery as well, it was good pay, and we needed as much as we could to join the Royal Marines at Deal in Kent.We live in Lincolnshire now, because of my wife's work, but we go down to Salisbury when we can, to see everybody.
Do they still have the market at Ringwood, I had a lot of relatives there.

Pidgley history
by: Ray Pidgley

My Mother was Edith (Sheen) Pidgley, who married Oliver Pidgley from Bournemouth.

My Mum's Mother and Father Emmy and Dicky Sheen lived in Millersford Bottom for years, we lived in Bournemouth my Father's home town, and then at the start of the war we moved to Godshill, just a couple of miles from Millersford.
I can remember some of my Aunt's and Uncle's names, Emmy and Dicky's children.
George who was married to Chinky and I know that they moved to near Ringwood.
Lizzie who's daughter now lives in School Lane, Godshill.
Rosie and Beattie who lived with her parents.
Francie, of who I was very fond of, and his wife, I think her name was Amy, who I thought the world of. They moved to Ringwood, and I often saw them in Ringwood Market.
Petty married Teddy Bull, and they had two or three children, that were friendly with my children who were called Gregory, who was a Royal Marine, Nicola who lives in Salisbury, Alex who went to Bishop Wordsworth School, Tricia, and my beautiful daughter who went to South Wilts Grammar School and was killed in a road incident at Morgans Vale who's name was Michelle Jayne.
My brother Mike lives in Totton, with his children who are married, and my other brothers Olly and George are no longer with us. My sisters were Irene who lives in London, Rosemary who lives near Salisbury, Pat who went to America, but has now passed away, and Lily who lived in Downton and has passed away also.
If I can help you with any more history, I shall be only too glad. Ray.
